5 Steps to Developing New Habits That "STICK"

Having trouble starting that new fitness routine but ready to sweat it out for the summer clothes? You need to develop the new successful habits, and while reading one of my favorite books, “Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath, I identified 5 steps for developing new habits that can directly relate to your fitness routine! Here they are...

1️⃣ Find “Bright Spots”

Where are things going right? Do more of this and less of looking at negative. What have you done in the past that lead to success? Celebrate that and find a way to repeat this!

2️⃣ Limit Choices!

More choices mean more chances to NOT decide. Make bad habits more difficult. If you have difficulty sticking to a routine because you struggle to follow an actual plan, find a gym and community so that all you have to do is show up. You limited the choices of what to do and if it’s going to work. Just show up!

3️⃣ Script Moves

Have a plan for what you want to change, don’t throw spaghetti at the wall hoping it sticks. Find days and times that you can make the gym without life getting in the way. Schedule them on your phone like an appointment and set an alert to go off an hour before just to remind yourself again.

4️⃣ Set Up Environment for Change

Environments play a crucial role on your ability to change and develop new habits. The simple habits of having your gym clothes packed the night before and put in your car can help you make sure you don’t forget the necessary items. Make sure whatever you are trying to switch is set up for success.

5️⃣ Create Triggers

All habits are created by a “trigger”. What is the new habit you want to adopt, and what can you do to create a new trigger for it? That simple act of setting an alert on your phone to go off and remind you there’s a set appointment you have with yourself can make for more commitment.
