3 Benefits of Track Athletes Performing Weight Training
Most track athlete’s don’t properly train for their sport, or even worse, they don’t weight train at all (download a free week of our in-season track program in the link below). All track athletes can benefit from a properly structured weight program to improve their performance and times. Here are 3 benefits of track athletes who weight train for sports performance.
Improve running economy
Prevent injuries and muscle imbalances which will improve running form
Weight training will make you faster and quicker
1: Improving running economy is the amount of oxygen you consume at a given pace relative to your body weight. Being stronger allows you to recruit the correct muscles for an optimized stride so that you do not default to relying on incorrect muscle groups.
2: If training properly, athletes can improve muscle imbalances thereby improving running form. If an athlete has one leg stronger than the other, would it not make sense that the athletes stride will be off? If an athlete is quad dominant, would it not make sense to develop glute and hamstring strength to improve speed and power? Not just improving speed, power, and efficiency, but also reducing injury probability.
3: Come out the blocks faster... kick faster at the end of the mile... run harder on the back stretch... all these and many more are benefits of a properly put together weight program for track athletes.
